Greetings!
The month of May is upon us and with that, the
annual recognition of "Older Americans Month." This year’s theme is
"Working Together for Strong, Healthy and Supportive Communities."
As an organization dedicated to older Americans
for the past 37 years, that theme strikes to the very heart of the
Colonial Club Senior Activity Center. From our humble origin in 1971,
the Colonial Club has always tried to work collaboratively to achieve
its mission in an effort to serve both our community and our seniors.
Over the years, we have learned time and time again that as much as
we’re seen as an organization that gives to the older adults in our
communities, we’ve also received much in return.
Senior volunteerism at the Colonial Club is an
invaluable gift that we receive day in and day out. These senior
volunteers share their expertise on various committees. They support
many activities,
sometimes on a daily basis
for the benefit of others. They lend their time and talent to answer
phones, sell tickets and plan events all in an effort to make the
Colonial Club a warm and welcoming place for older adults throughout
Northeast Dane County. Last month, we took time to recognize those
efforts at our annual Volunteer Recognition event on April 18.
Lynn Pawelski, our Volunteer Coordinator, also assembled a committee
to choose this year’s nominees for the United Way of Dane County
Community Volunteer Awards. Roger and Dottie Leclaire were
nominated for the family award in recognition of their numerous
contributions and Emma Link was nominated in recognition of her
20 years of volunteering. All three were recognized at the United Way
luncheon on April 23.
If you’re wondering how you might observe May as
Older Americans Month, think about
Emma, Dottie
and Roger. Their collective work over the years is a shining
example of what it means to be an older adult today. No longer willing
to fade into the background later in life, today’s seniors are vibrant,
involved and aware of the vast needs of our community. So during this
month, why not get involved by volunteering at the Colonial Club? Come
to the Salad Luncheon on May 9 or join the planning
efforts for the June 21st StrawberryFest
or choose from one
of the many other activities you’ll read about in this month’s Courier.
No matter your age, no matter your ethnicity, no
matter your zip code, your contributions as volunteer will help sustain
the efforts of the Colonial Club for years to come. And if we do believe
that in working together, we can create strong, healthy and supportive
communities, then we will have truly honored the spirit of Older
Americans Month.
